The Program

This instructor-led, live online course is designed to give students an understanding and confidence using Microsoft Project 2019 by providing hands-on participation in the demonstration of the software features and functions. The course provides a general understanding of Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling with brief discussions on Critical Chain and Agile project management.

Students will gain an understanding of "out of the box" software and how to customize it to the particular needs of different projects. Students will perform all the features and functions demonstrated as well as perform individual exercises to reinforce the material. Students will also be required to build their own personal project. At the end of this course, students will know how to create schedules, develop cost-loaded baselines, track progress and produce meaningful reports for stakeholders, as well as customize the software to their preferences. As part of the Capstone exercise, students will create an entire project of their choosing, employing the practices they learned in the course.

What You Will Learn

Students will gain an understanding of the principles of scheduling and the use of Microsoft Project 2019. The course is structured to cover all aspects of the software and how to use it effectively. Students will learn how to create schedules, develop cost-loaded baselines, track progress and produce meaningful reports for stakeholders, as well as customize the software to their preferences. This course also supports scheduling principles as documented in PMI's PMBOK® Guide.

Who Should Attend

  • Students of the Project Management (PMX) and Construction Project Management (CMX) certificate programs who need training in the software
  • Individuals who wish to gain proficiency in using Microsoft Project
  • Individuals who wish to enter the project management profession at the entry level with scheduling software knowledge
  • Individuals who wish to train their project management and scheduling/planning staff in the proficiency of Microsoft Project
  • Students who wish to learn how to configure Microsoft Project for compliance with PMI’s PMBOK® Guide and Practice Standard for Scheduling

 

Eligibility Requirements - Computer Literacy Skill

Students need to have a basic knowledge of computer and Internet skills in order to be successful in this course. These include the following:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, email clients) applications and ability to navigate the "Ribbon"
  • Knowledge of computer terminology, such as browser, application, etc.
  • Understanding of basic computer hardware and software; ability to perform computer operations, such as:
    • Using keyboard and mouse
    • Managing files and folders: save, name, copy, move, backup, rename, delete, check properties
    • Software installation, security and virus protection
    • Knowledge of copying and pasting, spell-checking, saving files in different formats
    • Sending and downloading attachments

Special Features

Students will have an opportunity to create a project plan, track progress and design and print reports. Students who do not miss any class time can claim Project Management Institute (PMI) Professional Development Units (technical). Contact PMI for more information.

This course is a supplement to the Certificate in Project Management program (PMX-900 series) and the Certificate in Construction Project Management program (CMX-900 series).

Technical Requirements

  • Students should have access to two device screens: one for the zoom lecture and one for using/following along with Microsoft Project during the lecture.
  • Students who do not have access to Microsoft Project 2019 will be able to access the software through the CSUDH Student Toro Virtual Lab.

Live Online Course Delivery

Note: All classes for this program are LIVE ONLINE. This instructor-led program utilizes our campus' Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) available directly at http://canvas.motorclubmonterey.com, as well as through our student portal, MyCSUDH. Live virtual class sessions are conducted at the day/time indicated in the program schedule. Attendance and participation via Zoom at all class sessions is required.

Mr. Wilkens has 46 years of experience, including 31 years of experience in project management. He has managed various projects in software, engineering and construction industries, both in the private and public sectors. He has lectured and presented papers in multiple areas of project management and is a recognized subject matter expert in planning & scheduling and earned value management. His experience includes professional development and mentoring of employees, training students in scheduling software systems, as well as developing and delivering PMP exam preparation courses. Mr. Wilkens continues to receive overwhelmingly positive feedback from his students.

Dr. Inamdar has over 30 years of combined experience in engineering, manufacturing management, project management and finance. He has taught business and management courses at two California State University campuses; and University of California, UCIEX. He is also an active faculty member of California Intercontinental University and serves as a chair for dissertations for international students. Kamal holds a bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Maharaja Sayajirao University, India; a Master's degree in Business Administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills; and a Doctorate degree in Education from Pepperdine University, California. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).

If a course in which you are interested is no longer displaying in the course schedule, please be aware that its registration deadline may have already passed, or the course may have already reached capacity.
